Casual cosplay ideas!

Throughout a variety of fandoms in the fictional universe, we have our fair share of wonderful casual cosplays. Despite the perceived low effort, they can be some of the coolest looking characters. In fact, some casual cosplays can look really amazing. Whatever the case may be, I’m sure you’re interested in dressing up in a casual cosplay, especially if your time or money is tight. If that’s so, then this post is for you!

In this article, I’ll give you 10 casual cosplay ideas you should definitely try out. Anyone can cosplay these characters. As usual, these characters are from a variety of fandoms including Anime, video games and comics.

I wanted to distinguish the difference between casual and closet cosplay. While they may seem similar, closet cosplays usually involve a lot more effort using what you already have in your closet to look as accurate to the character as possible.

Meanwhile, casual cosplays usually involve only wearing 1 or 2 items related to cosplaying, and accuracy isn’t as important. There may be many reasons why you would opt for a casual cosplay instead of a regular one (learn more about cosplay types here).

If you’re heading to a more casual event (like a cosplay park event), then you might not want to dress up completely in costume. Or if you simply don’t want to spend the time or commitment to go all out. Whatever your reason, I got casual cosplay ideas for you.

With that said you do need to be careful with casual cosplays; if you do it wrong or get too lazy, it’ll come off as tacky. That’s why I’ve picked characters on this list where you’ll have no issues with this.

Alright without further ado, let’s get started!

1. Super Sonico

In case you forgot, Super Sonico was a popular character 5-10 years ago! She is the cute mascot of Nitroplus, a video game developer. I recommend cosplaying Super Sonico because she is easily recognizable, despite having multiple possible outfits. I’ve seen cosplayers dress up in her original outfit, as well as casual beach/summer versions as well.

But as long as you wearing her signature pink wig and headphones, most people will know you’re dressing up as Super Sonico, no matter which version of her you do!

2. L from Death Note

A white t-shirt and blue jeans are all you need to cosplay L from Death Note! Photo by Limelychan.

L is the poster boy of all casual cosplays because he is by far the easiest character to cosplay! If you didn’t know, L is one of the main characters from Death Note, one of the most popular Anime of all time. He’s that cool and cute detective we all known to love.

And the best thing, if you want to cosplay as L, all you need is a white long-sleeve T-shirt and blue jeans! I would suggest bringing a large lollipop candy and try sprucing up your hair/wig. That way, everyone will definitely know you’re cosplaying as L.

3. Android 18 from Dragon Ball Z

Not only did Akira Toriyama (the creator of Dragon Ball) bless us with a wonderful series that we still love to this day, but he also gave us some characters we can cosplay as casually. One of those characters is Android 18. She’s one of the strongest Z Fighters and the perfect wife for Krillen!

Android 18’s entire outfit is basically regular clothing, so you’ll find it easy to cosplay her casually. If you have a friend joining you in cosplay, you can get them to cosplay as Android 17 (18’s brother).

4. Wednesday Addams from the Addams Family

Wednesday Addams has always been a great choice for a casual cosplay ideas. It’s really easy to cosplay as her. The most important thing is her signature ponytails

With the new Netflix series that came out late last year, Wednesday has seen a huge surge in popularity! So if you want to cosplay someone who is popular and easy to do casually, then Wednesday Addams is your girl!

5. Starfire (NASA edition)

Starfire is an iconic character from DC Comics. With her warm personality and strong attributes, she’s definitely one of the more popular characters out there. Now when it comes to Starfire, her regular edition would not be casual at all. But if you do her NASA edition, that’s definitely easier to cosplay. You just have to wear the shirt and wear her red wig, and you’re good to go!

6. Chloe Price from Life is Strange

Oh yes! The Bae from Life is Strange has been a popular cosplay for a very long time. There have been many different versions of Life is Strange, but I’d say none will be more iconic than the duo of Max and Chloe. She is a total baddie who does whatever the heck she wants, and that’s why everyone loves Chloe Price!

In terms of cosplaying, Chloe is really easy to cosplay as she simply wears regular clothing. Her most distinguishable feature is her blue hair and the toque, so make sure you have those two if you’re going to cosplay Chloe casually.

7. Mary Jane Watson from Spider-Man

There are tons of characters from the Marvel Universe that are elaborate and complex. But not Mary Jane Watson! She’s the cute redhead from Spider-Man who also happens to Peter Parker’s love interest. As you could imagine, you don’t need much to cosplay as her. As long as you have a white tank top shirt with the Spider-Man logo on it that is the most important thing when you decide to cosplay Mary Jane Watson.

8. Misty from Pokémon

If you don’t know who Misty is, then you missed out on a memorable Anime that is Pokémon! Misty is the Cerulean City Gym Leader, but she is more known as one of the original companions of Ash Ketchum (the main character in the Pokémon Anime). The nice thing about cosplaying Misty that she herself is a casual cosplay! You just need: orange wig, yellow shirt, red suspenders and blue jean shorts. You should also bring a Togepi plushie with you to complete the Misty look!

9. Lola Bunny from Space Jam

Who doesn’t love Lola Bunny? She’s part of the Looney Tunes squad, but more well-known for her appearances in Space Jam 1 and 2. She is the cutest bunny ever! All you need to cosplay Lola Bunny is her Space Jam basketball jersey, white gloves and bunny ears! And of course, bring a basketball with you. 🙂

If you have a partner, you can cosplay Lola Bunny and have Bugs Bunny with you (if you want to see a list of couples cosplay ideas, click here).

10. Kim Possible

Do you remember Kim Possible? She’s that awesome heroine who fights crime and the bad guys in her spare time. If you want to cosplay Kim Possible, you’ll definitely need an orange wig, black tank top and dark navy pants.

Bonus – Alphonse Elric from Fullmetal Alchemist

While we usually associate Alphonse Elric with his full body armored suit, did you know he has a casual version as well? That’s right! In his flashbacks in the Anime, you can see him in his white t-shirt and blue jeans. You can always cosplay this version of Alphonse as a joke. My friend did that once. It makes for a good joke!
