How to become cosplay famous!

So you want to be cosfamous, do you? Not a problem at all! While it may seem out of reach to be as popular as the professional cosplayers with millions of likes and followers, it’s definitely not impossible. However, it’s not that easy to achieve popularity in the Cosplay Community. What do I mean by this? Let’s get into it!

How do you become cosplay famous?

The one thing that famous and professional cosplayers have in common; they are all talented and hard-working. To become cosplay famous, you will need to spend a lot of time and effort into showcasing your newest and best cosplays consistently. You literally have to treat cosplay like a full-time job! So you should definitely ask yourself if this is what you want to pursue. It’s not easy to become cosplay famous or be on the professional level. But if you have the passion and work ethic, you too can become cosplay famous.

In this post, I’ll give you 5 things you NEED to know on how to become cosplay famous. While it’s definitely not easy to become cosfamous, with hard work, commitment and the right mindset, you can become a very successful cosplayer.

These are my observations based on the professional cosplayers I’ve worked with personally.

1. Learning to sew and craft is a must.

Being able to make your own costumes is a must! Photo by silent_pr1ncess.

This might be an obvious thing, but in order to become cosplay famous, you need to know how to sew and make your own costumes. Part of being a professional cosplayer is showcasing the costumes you’ve made.

For some people, this isn’t a problem and you got your sewing skills down. But if you don’t, then you’ll definitely need to learn how to sew. Unfortunately, sewing is one of those skills that does take a while to learn. It’s kind of like learning a new language; sewing takes a lot of practice and patience. But once you commit to it, you’ll eventually be proficient at sewing!

Speaking of commitment…

2. Being cosplay famous takes a lot of work!

It takes a lot of work to be cosfamous! Cosplayer: mingmihoo.

You might think being cosplay famous is only about posting cosplay selfies every now and then.

Not even close!

There is a lot of work involved when you’re a professional cosplayer. As I mentioned before, cosplay becomes your full-time job. It’s one thing to do cosplay for fun, but it’s another when you’re doing as a source of livelihood. You are literally spending the entire day doing cosplay-related things.

Not only do you have to work on your cosplays full-time, but you also need to be marketing yourself so that the world knows all about you.

If you’re like me, I absolutely dread marketing because self-promoting can be exhausting! Not only that, you got to have some perseverance in doing so, and at times it can be dull as well. But that’s what you have to do in order to become cosplay famous. Marketing yourself as a top cosplayer is essential.

Being cosplay famous is not something easy to do. It takes a lot of work. But if you’re passionate about cosplaying and love the thought of spending all-day doing things related to cosplay, then being cosplay famous may be for you!

3. Being cosplay famous takes a lot of commitment.

Do you ever get discouraged when your post on TikTok or Instagram doesn’t do well? And then decide to take a break from cosplay for a while? Well, you can’t do that! Becoming cosplay famous takes time and a lot of commitment. You won’t be cosplay famous overnight. It takes time, energy and a lot of effort to be recognized as a top cosplayer. Not only can it take years to learn to sew and craft cosplay at a high level, but it can also take years to to be seen as a high-end cosplayer.

You got to show up and get the work done, even if no one recognizes you right away. Even if your social media posts aren’t performing as well. All professional cosplayers didn’t get recognized right away; they took years in order to become successful, along with a lot of hard work and commitment.

4. You got to keep up with the trends.

Keeping up with trends such as cosplaying from Genshin; they’re very important for being cosfamous. Cosplayer: chibiusagimx.

While you can always do whatever you cosplay you want, generally speaking as a famous cosplayer, you’ll want to cosplay the most popular and trendy characters. It only makes sense, right? In order to become cosplay famous, you got to be doing the cosplays that everyone is searching for at the moment. So that means going for characters that are the most popular at the moment.

5. Social media is a pain but required.

I remember attending one of Yaya Han’s livestream Q&A regarding cosplay marketing. One of the questions she received was, “Is social media required?”

Without hesitation, she basically said, “Yes absolutely.”

That should tell you everything you need to know about cosplay and social media. You absolutely need to use social media to showcase and market your cosplays. Otherwise, no one will know about your work. Because cosplayers are all on social media, whether on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, TikTok, etc.

Unfortunately, that means you’ll have to adapt to whatever that social media platform is promoting at the moment and catering to what they want. For example, it seems now that despite Instagram being an app for photo sharing, they have decided to cater more towards video reels (i.e. short videos). Because TikTok is so popular these days, you’ll need to make short videos in order to get engagement.

I know for me, it can be really annoying because social media can be difficult and it’s not easy knowing why your social media posts aren’t getting much engagement. And it seems as time goes on, it becomes even more difficult as the platform ages; that’s been my experience. I remember back in 6-7 years ago, my “terrible” photos on Instagram would get so many likes and engagement. Yet today, I post much better photos and hardly get much engagement.

So yes, social media is a requirement in order to become cosplay famous and stay that way. You’ll just have to adapt to the trends and do what the algorithm wants.
