This post is all about plus size cosplay ideas! As cosplayers, we all come in different sizes and shapes. And while most cosplays are accessible for anyone to do, some of them may be difficult for us people who are…bigger. Well not to fear, that’s what this post is for, for you guys that considered yourself chubby cosplay or bbw cosplay.
In this article, I will go through 20+ plus size characters to cosplay.
Cosplay is for everyone, especially plus size cosplayers! It’s a great way to promote body positivity in the community (Lome, Jordan Kass. 2016. “The Creative Empowerment of Body Positivity in the Cosplay Community.” Transformative Works and Cultures, no. 22.) And in this post, we’ll go through some awesome cosplay ideas!
NOTE: While this post is meant to cater to plus size cosplayers, it’s NOT meant to imply that you can only cosplay these characters if you’re plus size. On top of that, just because a character is easier to cosplay if they’re not plus size, doesn’t mean you cannot if you are.
What makes a good plus size cosplay ideas?
Originally, I had a list of things that qualify for a good plus size cosplay. But I felt it’s too subjective and just pigeon holes you plus size cosplayers too much. So I’ve decided to have one criteria:
If YOU enjoy cosplaying that character.
You can look great in a plus size cosplay or it can fit really well. Or the character is perfect for bigger cosplayers.
But at the end of the day, if you don’t enjoy cosplaying the character or don’t feel comfortable in it, then everything else doesn’t matter. So as long as you enjoying cosplaying a specific character, that’s the most important thing. That’s why they say cosplaying is for EVERYONE.
With that out of that way, here are 20+ plus size characters to cosplay!
1. Qiyana from League of Legends (True Damage version)
Forget KDA; it’s all about True Damage! If you prefer to do a relatively new League of Legends cosplay that isn’t the usual Akali or Kai’Sa, then consider doing Qiyana. Her look is badass! Since True Damage is a popular cosplay, you’ll find plenty of plus size cosplay costumes online!
2. Super Mario
Whether you’re petite or plus size, Mario looks great for every body type! Mario himself has had a bunch of different-looking outfits over the years, so how you customize his cosplay is totally up to you. Just make you sure have his signature red cap!
3. Queen of Hearts from Alice in Wonderland
If you wanted to be different and cosplay a Disney character that is neither a hero or princess, then Queen of Hearts is for you! She’s an evil character from Alice in Wonderland that looks great for plus size characters!
4. Power Girl from DC Universe (plus size cosplay friendly!)
A superheroine from the DC world, Power Girl is a popular character to cosplay and especially awesome for plus size cosplayers! And she’s really easy to cosplay; all you need a custom leotard and a cape.
5. Totoro from My Neighbor Totoro (adorable plus size Anime cosplay!)
Who doesn’t love Studio Ghibli films? Totoro is one of the most recognizable characters at cosplay conventions (oh how I miss them). It’s such an adorable cosplay and whether you’re plus size or not, anyone can cosplay Totoro. You can opt for the entire suit, or go for a casual version like this photo.
6. Bowsette from…Super Mario?
For those who don’t know, Bowsette is not an actual character from a Mario game; it was fan-made. When the New Super Mario Bros game was coming out for the Switch, there’s an option for Toad to transform into Peach. One day, someone did the same thing for Bowser…and then Bowsette was created and went viral!
Unfortunately, Bowsette is past the cosplay hype deadline. But it’s still great as one of the plus size characters. She’s relatively easy to do and being a fan fiction, easily customizable.
7. Snow White from Snow White and the Seven Dwarves
The original Disney princess, Snow White is a classic character and one of the great plus size characters to cosplay. Some may call Snow White the derpiest princess of them all, but I think she’s cool in my books.
8. Mina Ashido from My Hero Academia
Every Shonen series needs someone like Mina: laid back, bubbly and a cheery side character of MHA! Mina is pink-colored and looks like an alien. While not being very good in her studies, Mina is very cheerful and outgoing. She may not be one of the main characters, but she is still a nice choice for any MHA cosplay ideas if you don’t want to do the usual.
9. Mad Moxxi from Borderlands (badass plus size characters)
Borderlands is somewhat of an older game now, but the character designs are still amazing. Mad Moxxi is a badass girl and has a taste for violence! She’s a perfect fit for someone who is looking for a plus size cosplay. She is a little bit trickier to cosplay though; you’ll need some makeup skills to get that face of hers!
10. Merida from Brave (plus size characters)
Merida is a popular cosplay choice and for good reason. She is strong, bold and of course brave! Although she is officially one of the Disney princesses, Merida doesn’t fit the stereotype at all; she is short-tempered and fights for herself. When you cosplay Merida, you get to wear an orange curly wig, a cool-looking dark green dress and get to wield a large bow!
11. Raven from Teen Titans (plus size cosplay)
Raven is one of the most popular DC characters from Teen Titans! With her numerous abilities such a telepathy and manipulating objects, she is a powerful superhero. Her costume is great for all shapes and sizes.
12. Harley Quinn from…a bunch of DC movies/shows?
Do I really need to explain who Harley Quinn is? She is probably the most famous DC character right now. Whether you’re skinny or not skinny, Harley Quinn is a character that all body types can cosplay.
13. Chun Li from Street Fighter (plus size cosplay)
Yes I know Chun Li isn’t plus size in Street Fighter, but who cares? If you’re plus size, you probably got super strong thighs which is perfect for Chun Li!
14. Princess Tutu from Princess Tutu (plus size Anime characters)
You’ve heard of the story about the Ugly Duckling, right? Well this series takes that story to a whole new level. Princess Tutu is about a duck that’s been given an amulet, allowing the duck to transform into a girl who becomes Princess Tutu. She sets out on a quest to regain a prince’s shattered heart in order to save him.
Overall, she is a cute character to cosplay. If you’re into dresses or ballerina, Princess Tutu is perfect for one of your magical girl cosplay ideas!
15. Mei from Overwatch
The nice thing about Overwatch is that all the characters can be cosplayed by everyone, and Mei is no exception. Mei uses her ice abilities to freeze her opponents! Her outfit is a comfortable suit that’s appropriate for all body shapes and sizes.
16. Tohru from Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid
One of the man characters of Dragon Maid, Tohru is a female dragon who has been brought to the regular world. In her human form, she’s a cute and bubbly girl. Her outfit is really cool so if you want to be a dragon maid, Tohru is your girl!
17. Diane from Seven Deadly Sins
The gentle giantess, Diane is one of the more popular characters from The Seven Deadly Sins. She is incredibly strong, using her hammer and her connection to nature to fight off enemies. It doesn’t take much to cosplay Diane, making a good choice as one of the plus size cosplay ideas!
18. Psy (Oppa Gangnam Style!)
Am I the only one that still remembers this lovely song? I actually went to Gangnam last year when I was in Seoul. 🙂
19. Gragas from League of Legends (Vandal version)
There are only a handful of plus size characters in League of Legends, but Gragas is one of them. If you ever wanted to be a kickass biker, then Vandal Gragas is the way to go.
20. Himiko Toga from My Hero Academia
Despite being a villain of the series, Toga is a very popular choice for any My Hero Academia cosplay ideas. And we can see why; she is your typical yandere with a cute but sinister personality. Even though she’s a bad guy, you can’t help but love Toga and her sadistic ways!
21. Captain America
Arguably the leader of the Avengers squad, Captain America is a classic hot Marvel cosplay character. Captain America has a few variations, so you can make the costume as simple or as unique as you want!
22. Nozomi Tojo from Love Live!
I randomly picked Nozomi out of all the Love Live! characters. But really, you can cosplay any character from the series. Love Live! is a great choice for plus size cosplayers because the series is so popular, the costumes have been mass-produced everywhere in cosplay stores. Therefore, you’ll have an easier time finding the right size for you with Love Live! outfits.
23. Peter Griffin from Family Guy (classic plus size cosplay ideas)
We tend to look to Anime and video games for cosplay ideas, but why not turn to Western cartoons for inspiration? Peter Griffin is the main character of Family Guy, a funny show that’s been around for a long time now. I’d say he’s cooler to cosplay than Homer Simpson!
Let’s go through all the plus size characters to cosplay:
